The earcups with a closed back block out some ambient noise, but are not as effective as a pair or noise-canceling headphones. The left earcup features an aux port, which can be used to connect other audio devices. On the right earcup, you'll find controls for power, volume, and an MicroUSB charging port. We love that these headphones have a Lightning connector however, we're disappointed that they don't support USB-C.

The headphones have Neodymium drivers that provide powerful, accurate audio. You can hear all the frequencies of your favourite music with these headphones. Sony's WH1000XM5 headphones provide minor improvements to the flagship over-ears launched in 2017. The new headphones are minimalistic, featuring slim and sleek headband, earcups that are circular and a polished metallic finish. These are seriously lightweight and comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

The new model features the same outstanding noise cancellation and is augmented with four beamforming microphones that allow hands-free calls. A notable improvement is location awareness which adjusts ambient sound control settings based on the location where you are. If you're at home, they might switch to a lower noise cancelling level than when you're riding the train to work. They can also bring in additional outside sound to help you be conscious of your surroundings during walks around town.

Another option is multipoint, which allows you to connect the headphones to two devices simultaneously. This is an excellent option if you are looking to listen to music on your laptop while taking calls on your phone at the same time. Multipoint isn't disabled by default, but you can easily enable it using the Headphones Connect App's System tab. find more is that when you enable multipoint you can't to use the top-quality Bluetooth LDAC codec.

Similar to the WH-1000XM4s before it, the Sony WH-1000XM5's touch controls let you manage music playback as well as make calls. You can swipe forward and backwards using the touchpad to skip tracks, or backwards to stop and resume playing. The right ear cup has physical buttons for volume and power.

If you have an iPhone, you can customize the headphones with Siri commands. You'll also have access to other features such as an individual assistant and a battery meter. Sony is also offering voice prompts to help you through the functions of the headphones but I did find that they might be too chatty for some users.

The WH1000XM5s battery life is 30 hours when noise cancellation is on, which is the same as previous generations. 40 hours when it's off, is only a few hours less than what competitors offer. The headphones also come with a soft carrying case that protects them from dust, scratches, impact, and slight water damage.
