One in three people over 65 experience falls annually, and these can often be severe. Elderly individuals living alone who are more vulnerable due to fragility or preexisting medical conditions are at particular risk from such injuries; oftentimes a fall can have disastrous results when no help is readily available at once.

Personal alarms are an effective way to decrease falls that result in injury and hospitalisation for elderly individuals living alone, although it's essential to consider each person's needs and preferences when selecting one for an elderly loved one. There is a variety of alarm options available including GPS trackers for seniors with fall detection technology that automatically notify emergency contacts and monitoring centres when someone falls.

Elderly alarms can be an ideal solution for elderly individuals at high risk of falling and provide a cost-effective and flexible alternative to residential care services or assisted living accommodation. Furthermore, elderly alarms provide peace of mind to relatives and friends worried about their elderly loved ones.

In order to gain insight into older adults who use personal alarms, a qualitative research study was conducted with 31 participants aged over 65 who had sustained a fall within six months prior to interview. Interview questions focused on collecting data on experiences related to falling, seeking and receiving help, perceived benefits/barriers of alarm use etc. Participants were recruited from metropolitan general practices/physiotherapy clinics/community organizations/health promotion activities across a metropolitan region in Canada.

Four subgroups of alarm users were identified. fall alert bracelets The first subgroup made effective use of their personal alarm and advocated for its use, the second owned an alarm but didn't use it, while a third didn't due to cost considerations but were open to receiving one; and finally there were people unwilling to consider using any device even when provided one. gps tracker for alzheimer patients Intervention could target these first and second groups according to their stage of readiness for change while third and fourth groups may require alternative strategies in order to promote benefits associated with personal alarms.

An elderly fall detector can be an invaluable aid during an emergency situation, as these devices are equipped to detect falls and contact emergency services even if the wearer is unconscious. This helps avoid long periods of time spent lying unconscious after falling, which increases injury risk significantly and can be particularly hazardous for older individuals with limited mobility. Some devices also feature two-way communication features so our 24/7 response team can communicate directly with the person who has fallen via alarm pendant or wristband and give reassurance and ensure assistance is on its way quickly.
