Luckily, there are many different devices on the market that can provide an SOS signal to alert rescuers and family members of the user's location. Some devices also come with additional features, like two-way communication and GPS tracking.

SOS Devices

One of the most popular types of SOS devices are personal locator beacons (PLBs). These small, battery-powered devices are designed to be carried by individuals in remote areas, and they feature a built-in GPS receiver that can transmit distress signals over satellite networks. They can also be activated by pressing a button or by sending a message through a smartphone app. PLBs can be a great option for hikers, hunters, boaters, or anyone who may find themselves in an emergency situation far from civilization.

falls sensor alarm The SOS feature on the Apple Watch is a bit different than on other medical alert devices, because it does not use a base station like Bay Alarm Medical's SOS All-in-One device. Instead, the Apple Watch uses the iPhone's built-in Emergency SOS feature. This is a quick and easy way to activate the SOS app, which will then automatically call emergency services or your emergency contacts. The Apple Watch also has the advantage of including automatic fall detection, which is a significant benefit that most medical alert watches lack.

In order to trigger the Emergency SOS feature on the Apple Watch, rapidly press the side button and volume buttons three times. The iPhone will then begin a countdown and send a message to your emergency contacts, if you have them enabled in the Health app. You can cancel the countdown by pressing the side button and volume buttons again, or you can tap Done when it finishes if you no longer need help. The Health app includes a list of your emergency contacts, which you can edit to include your doctor or other relevant contact information. You can also enable Crash Detection, which will inform emergency services and your emergency contacts if your iPhone is in a severe crash. You can set this in the Health app by tapping your profile picture, then scrolling to Emergency Contacts. You must have an active data plan to use this feature. For best results, make sure you have at least 50MB of available data on your iPhone when using this feature. If you don't have enough data, you can buy more by selecting Cellular Data + from the bottom of the screen.
