Reasons Your Fiat 500 Key Fob Won't Work

A key fob from Fiat 500 allows you to easily open doors and start your car. However, there are a variety of reasons why the key fob might stop functioning. This includes a dead battery, water damage, receiver modules issues, and interference.

This listing is for an NEW replacement Fiat Flip Key Remote that looks like the Ilco brand. It needs to be professionally programmed (click here to find local locksmiths for automotive locksmiths). This remote includes trunk, lock and unlock buttons.

Dead Coin Battery

A dead battery is the main cause of your 500 key fob being inoperative. Modern key fobs come with a limited operating range and must be within a few feet of the vehicle to function. If you are far from your car and press the keyfob button it will not respond and display the message "Key Fob Not Detected".

If this happens, replace the battery of your coin cell (Part number CR2032) by a new one from a trusted brand such as Panasonic, Duracell, or Energizer. You can usually find them in your local hardware store or online.

After you've replaced the battery of your coin cell, you can test it by standing close to your Fiat 500 and pressing the buttons. The car should flash its parking lights and the key fob should work the lock and unlock switches.

If your key fob does not work after replacing the battery, it could be water damage that prevents it from interacting with the module in your vehicle. Water damage can happen in a variety of ways, ranging from a light splash to submerging the fob salt water at the beach. If you suspect that your fob has been exposed to water, you can place it in a rice bag to draw out the moisture. If this doesn't work your fob is likely to need to be reset by an experienced auto locksmith or dealer.

Water Damage

Water damage can occur when you submerge the fob in the ocean or wash it in a machine. Saltwater can cause the circuit board to become shorted and eventually end up dying. The fob getting wet is not a good idea however, if you drop it into a cup of water or fail to take it out of your pocket before you run the washing machine and you don't have a chance, don't give in.

First take the battery off the fob. Clean the electronic chip with isopropyl or a similar product and then dry it thoroughly before replacing the battery. Test the fob afterward to check if it's working. If the key still doesn't work, it may need to be reset. This is usually handled by an auto locksmith or dealer.

If the key is a newer model and was not programmed to your vehicle, it will likely need to be replaced completely. A professional locksmith for automotive can complete this simple process. The locksmith must cut the key to match the ignition in your vehicle. The locksmith will also have to program your fob into the car's system. This is a quick and cost-effective process that is usually completed in the next day.

Receiver Module Issues

The 500 key fob you have may not function because it's out of range. The remote usually has an operating range of 30 feet or less and if it's far from your vehicle, it will not respond to your commands. You can easily fix this by moving the remote closer to your vehicle until it responds.

If your fob does not work after replacing the coin battery, also known as a "button", "watch" or "button" it could be a problem with the internal circuit board. Reprogramming the fob is usually the solution to the issue. You can find the instructions on how to do this for all vehicles by searching YouTube or reading the owner's manual.

It could be necessary to replace the clips made of metal that hold the coin batteries in place. If they lose tension it could prevent the coin battery from sitting properly, and this will cause the remote to malfunction.

In rare instances, the fob might be out of sync with your vehicle because of software or hardware problems. This issue can be fixed by visiting your local dealer or auto-locksmith to reprogram your key fob. In some instances, they may need to reinstall the program in your body control module too.

Interference

In addition to a dead battery on a coin The key fob might not be able to transmit or receive the signal due to interference. This could occur if the key fob is near an electronic radio transmitter (cell phones and radar detectors) or another source of electromagnetic radiation. Other reasons why the key fob might not function include a poor connection to the buttons and internal chip or water damage.

If the key fob been unable to function for a while without notice and you've tried every option at home to solve it e.g. replacing the battery, reprogramming it and using the spare key fob, you could have a faulty receiver module on your 500. The receiver module is located under the dash and is able to pick up the radio frequency signals from the key fob. G28 converts them into electronic commands that the vehicle interprets.

Fortunately, there's an easy method of resetting all of the onboard systems in your 500 keys, including the key fob. Disconnect the battery for 15 minutes by removing first the negative cable and then the positive cable. Then, reconnect the battery. This will remove any remaining electricity, and allow you to restart the computer in your car. This can help get your key fob to work again. If the issue continues, you should consult an expert technician. They will be able to diagnose the exact cause of your issues.
