How to Deal With Locked Keys in Your Vehicle

It is not uncommon to lock your keys inside the vehicle. This could be a stressful experience. But, this is a situation that can be resolved.

You can avoid being locked out by keeping spare keys in a safe and secure location. You can also include roadside assistance to your vehicle, which covers breakdowns and assists drivers in getting back on their way.

Locking the Doors

If you lock your keys in your car, it could be embarrassing. In the best-case scenario, you have someone from your family or a friend nearby who can come unlock the door for you without causing damage to your vehicle. If not, it could still be relatively simple to get back inside your vehicle using the proper tools. It depends on the type of car you drive and the type of locks that are installed in it.

For instance, if your vehicle has manual locks rather than sensors, you could make use of a rod or wire to unlock the doors. This might be a wire coat hanger that you bend into the shape of a lasso or on vehicles with more modern technology the rod of a metal is embedded into your key fob. Many hardware stores offer "lock picking" sets that include a metal rod and instructions to unlock your car's doors.

G28 Car Keys must first identify the location of the "unlock" button. It may be near the key fob, or it could be located on a panel at the front of the vehicle that is visible from the windshield. Once you've got this information, you can use the rod or coat hanger to create a gap between the door and its frame or window. Then, you can enter the gap and press the button to unlock the door.

Make sure that your door locks are equipped with a release button that you can press to open them. Some cars, especially those with more recent models are equipped with this feature in the trunk. It is usually near the seat of the driver. You can also try the emergency release tab which folds the seat down to allow you to crawl into the trunk and grab your keys.

If none of these strategies are working, it's time to call for help. You could ask a friend to help you, provided they own the same vehicle as yours. You can also ask your dealer to create a new key for you. You can get the new key for a lot less than hiring locksmith.

Locking the Trunk

It's not a great idea to secure the trunk of your car unless you want to keep valuables out of sight. While it's an excellent way to ensure that thieves aren't able to access your stuff, it also prevents you from opening the trunk without using your key fob. But, you can work around this problem by hiding a spare key under the rear fender well or on the floor of the trunk. This method isn't 100% secure and can be easily spotted by a thief, but it can stop thieves from opening your trunk.

Modern automobiles have made great efforts to ensure that only the key fob is able to open the trunk. To safeguard your possessions, many manufacturers have locked the trunk release lever inside the cabin or in the back seat. You can still save money if you make use of a Slim Jim, or call roadside assistance rather than hiring a locksmith.

You can use a wire hanger to try and open the trunk of your vehicle. But, you must be cautious not to damage the paint job. You will also need to bend the hanger on one side so that it has a small hook. Afterwards, insert the hook into the gap between the back of the seat and the trunk. If you are able to feel resistance, you have located the lever or button that opens the trunk.

If you have access to the cab of the vehicle, you could also push a button located in the cabin's front to open the trunk. But, this isn't a 100% secure method since it is possible for thieves to see the button and know that you have your valuables in the trunk.

The other method involves using the latch mechanism to unlock the trunk. This is a straightforward method however it only works when your car isn't fully charged and you can hear the door locks click when you press them. The engine may also need to be running in order to activate the latch.

Examining the Battery

If you are unable to open the doors using any of the methods listed above, it's likely that you have a dead battery in your key fob. The good thing is that many car fobs have a built-in emergency key that can be used to open the driver's door if it is locked. This is usually an additional key that comes with the vehicle or can be located in the center console or in the glove compartment.

The most common reason why a car key won't turn in the ignition is because there is an obstruction in the lock's cylinder. Dirt or grime, as well as other debris can cause this issue. It blocks the pins to drop correctly when you insert your key. You can use compressed air and flashlights to identify any obstructions inside the lock cylinder. If you're careful you can clear the debris and ensure that your key works in the ignition when needed.

Another issue that can cause a car key not to turn in the ignition is damage to the cylinder itself. In this instance it is likely that the lock cylinder has been damaged and requires replacement. This can be a costly repair, but fortunately, there are ways to temporarily fix this problem.

You can, for example using a wire hook to pull off a small portion of the door handle where the key cylinder resides. However, this technique is not recommended if you don't have a lot of experience in DIY projects as it is difficult to complete and could harm your vehicle. In addition, you should always ensure that the car is completely turned off before beginning any work on it.

Locking your keys accidentally in your car is an embarrassing situation to be in. Be calm and follow the guidelines to retrieve your keys safely without causing further damage to your vehicle. If you can, you should also inquire with your insurance provider to determine if the replacement of your key is covered under your policy.

Calling for help

There are some things you need to do before calling for help when you have locked your keys inside your car. First, if you are at home and have an extra key, have someone bring it to you and then unlock your car using that method. This will avoid having to pay an emergency locksmith service call. The second option is to call the number of a family member or friend's phone to determine whether they have the key. Many people have spare car keys at home or work to help in case you've locked yourself out. Thirdly, you can contact roadside assistance organizations like AAA. They have kits specifically designed to open vehicles and will be capable of opening your vehicle for much less than the locksmith would charge. They will need your VIN (located near the front wiper on the windshield) and proof of ownership to open it.

They will dispatch police to your location and utilize special equipment or methods to remove the animal or child out of the car. This could include using a slim jim to open the door, or breaking the window.

Finding your car keys locked in the vehicle is never fun, but it can be a minor inconvenience in most cases. These tips can help you avoid being stranded and prepare a plan for the next time this occurs.

Drivers can take other steps to avoid getting stuck in their car in the future. For example you can download the app of the car manufacturer or keep a spare key in a safe location outside the vehicle. Moody also recommends that motorists purchase a roadside service plan that provides assistance for locking out and contacting their car manufacturer to get an alternate key. This can save you money in the long term, since getting locked out of your car is almost always covered by this type of coverage.
