Transponder Chip

The transponder, or "chip key", is a micro-chip that is embedded in the head of your car keys. It's one of the most important safety layers for your vehicle. The term "transponder" is derived from the combination of the responder and transmitter which is because, when the key is inserted into the ignition and turned on, the antenna ring on your vehicle transmits a jolt of radio frequency energy to the transponder chip. The chip responds with its unique identification code to the antenna ring, and the car's computers can decipher that information and determine if it's a legitimate key.

If the key is not transponder the vehicle will be locked. The chip is protected by an extra layer of polycarbonate that blocks it from being copied or duplicated using regular mechanical keys. Beishir Lock and Security carries the largest selection of transponder keys for sale at just a fraction of the price of car dealerships.

Transponder chips first began to gain popularity in the 80's, when GM introduced them into the Corvette. This technology significantly reduced car thefts, since it made hot-wiring obsolete in the past. This is the most basic explanation of the chip key. Immobiliser System

The engine immobiliser system (also called the anti-theft system) is a crucial aspect of your car's security. When you insert your key into the ignition switch or Smart Key fob, the transponder chip inside will send an encoded code to the vehicle's Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The ECU confirms that the code generated by the chip matches the one stored in it and only then allows the engine to begin.

This is the primary way that the immobiliser of your car stops theft. If the code on the chip is not compatible, the ECU will stop the flow of current from the fuel pump relay to the injection system, preventing the engine from starting. In addition the immobiliser could disable the starter motor as well as the ignition coil to stop the engine from starting by force.

Unfortunately, the system is not completely secure. Thieves can crack the code that unlocks the immobiliser on your car and make it start. However, the most recent versions of these systems feature a an extended cryptographic sequence that will be more difficult to determine.

Immobilisers for cars are mandatory since 1998, however many cars had rudimentary immobiliser systems fitted before that. It is also worth noting that while an immobiliser makes it more difficult to steal a car it does not prevent thieves from towing it away or breaking into the car to get at your possessions.
