Batik is a type of textile art that uses the process of dyeing to create patterns and designs on cloth. The fabric is drawn on with canting and then dipped in a dye bath three to four times. The areas that have been protected with resist retain their original color, while the dyed areas contrast with the untreated areas to form the pattern. The word batik is derived from the Javanese term batikan, which means "to draw."

A batik is usually made from cotton, linen, silk, or a combination of these materials. A linseed oil coating or wax is used to protect the fabric from water and to help it hold its shape. The batik is then embroidered or hand-drawn to produce the desired design. This process takes up to a year and results in a much finer design than printed batik.

The most common motifs in a Javanese batik are the kawung, semen, gringsing, nitik, cuwiri, parang, and barong. The cuwiri motif signifies a person's good relationship with others. Lastly, the parang motif is worn by members of the royal family and represents a strong bond with one another.
