Double Glazed Window Repairs

Double glazing is an investment that is worth it, but can be frustrating when it doesn't perform. Most problems can be repaired and you don't need to replace windows or doors.

Double-glazed windows comprise two glass panels separated by an extremely thin gap, which is filled with insulating gas such as argon or krypton. This makes windows more efficient.

Broken panes

Double-paned windows are harder to break than single panes of glass, but they can still shatter or break. When a pane becomes broken in your double glazing, it's important to repair it quickly to prevent water and energy loss.

Depending on upvc window repairs of the crack you can choose to make a temporary fix or opt for more extensive repair using epoxy. A temporary repair will help to prevent further cracking, and will keep out rain and cold air. A more extensive repair will strengthen the crack, and will provide an even stronger seal.

To replace a double-pane damaged window, remove the frame and place it on an even surface. Install a grid of duct tape over the pane in order to stop glass fragments from falling during removal. Once the tape is secured remove the double pane glass out of the frame. Next, clean the grooves and rabbet using a wire brush and vacuum or wipe them with a damp cloth. If necessary, remove the wood molding and scrape away any metal or putty before putting in the new pane. Apply silicone caulk into the rabbets and grooves in order to ensure a snug fit.

If you're repairing a cracked glass by yourself, start by sanding it until it's smooth and free of paint. You can also use a heat gun to soften any glazing or putty points. Once the rabbet has been cleaned, you can use a blade for a putty to push the rope into position. Make sure that the putty has an even thickness, and that it presses evenly against the glass and frame.

If you prefer a long-term fix the repair of an epoxy is a better choice than a replacement. This requires more work and takes longer, but it can be more appealing and will last much longer than a quick temporary repair.

Condensation

Condensation is one of the most frequent double-glazed window issues, but it doesn't necessarily mean your windows are defective. It's good to know that your windows display condensation. This indicates that the double glazing is functioning as it is supposed to, keeping out the cold while allowing the warmth.

It's actually water vapour from your home which condenses on the glass's surface when you notice condensation. It's quite a natural phenomenon and isn't likely to cause any harm to your windows unless you allow it sit on the glass for too long.

The cause of internal condensation is usually excessive humidity or low temperatures in the room. This causes cold surfaces, like windows which draw in moisture with a high in dewpoint (the temperature where water turns into liquid). The steam from kettles, showers, and hot pots and the cooking pans can also create humidity in kitchens and bathrooms.

To prevent condensation, try not to hang wet clothing near your windows and always ensure that your uPVC frames are able to provide ample air circulation to stop the build-up of moisture. You should also ensure that your double glazed windows are properly insulated and fitted, with the right gap (6mm is best) for optimum energy efficiency. It is also possible to add one-way air vents on your windows to increase the insulation. If you're still experiencing condensation, there's probably a problem with gaskets or seals and this is something that should be handled by a professional.

Draughts

A window that is drafty is a sign that the seal between the glass panes of your double-glazing has started to leak, and it's likely to require replacement. This can affect the insulation of your home and cause an increase in your energy bills, so it's important to act as soon as you notice the problem.

Window repair services can replace your sealed unit, restoring the efficiency to your windows. They can also upgrade your existing frames to incorporate new energy-saving features, like gas-filled argon glass units with thermal spacer bars that will cut down on the loss of heat and reduce your heating bills.

It is also worth checking the locking mechanisms on your double-glazed windows. Older uPVC window locks are notorious for becoming stiff over time however, it's simple to fix this by lubricating them regularly with a specialist uPVC cleaning product.

Smudging

Double-glazed windows are made up of two separate panes, with the spacer or gas in between. This creates a strong seal to stop heat from escaping through the frame. They're an excellent option for saving energy and reducing the carbon footprint. However, double glazing may encounter a myriad of issues that can affect its performance and longevity. This includes condensation, fog and difficulty closing or open.

If you are having trouble opening your double-glazed windows it could be due to the weather. It could also be due to a issue with the hinges, or handles. Wiping them down with cold water and lubricating them can help to alleviate the issue, but you should contact the company you bought your windows from as soon as possible to have it fixed.

If your windows or doors have dropped or sagged over time, this is another frequent issue which can be easily solved by a trained professional. It is also worth checking the warranty to see what repairs are covered under this.

Fogged or foggy glass can be caused by moisture in the panes. It's usually a sign that your seals are faulty or that your double-glazing unit requires to be replaced. This is a straightforward solution that can be achieved without the need to replace the whole window.

To correct this issue, a technician will make tiny holes to vent out any moisture between the glass panes and the remainder of the window. Once the moisture has been removed, a new antifog coating is put on and the window is sealed. Sometimes, the window might need to be removed before this happens but most of the time, it can be carried out from inside the home.

Mist

Mist can be a major issue for older double glazing, especially when it is present on the inside and outside of the windows. This is due to a failure of the seal that is designed to keep moisture and air between two panes. During the manufacture of double-glazed units, this seal is created by sealing both panes using an airtight polysulphide or butyl seal around the edges of the glass and spacer bars. This seal is designed to prevent the window from leaking and to provide insulation. It isn't easy to clean misted double-glazed windows because you have to break the seal in order to do so.

The issue with mists is that they permit moisture to enter which causes condensation between the glass panes. This is due to a large difference in temperature between the external and internal surfaces of the glass. The water is then absorbed in the gaps and causes the appearance of a milky white. This can be quite ugly and can be a pain to get rid of.

Some companies claim they can repair misting double-glazed windows by drilling holes in the unit and injecting chemical through the holes that absorb moisture from the inside. This is not permanent solution and it's much easier to replace the entire double-glazed unit.

It is important to keep your windows clean and ventilated regularly. It is also a good idea to use extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens and wipe windows with an damp cloth to minimize the build-up of moisture. If you're not able to eliminate the problem completely, we recommend replacing your double-glazed units with A-rated ones to improve the efficiency of your energy usage.
