Unlock Your Car With Shoelaces

Many vehicles now have heightened security features. Older models usually include post locks that can be opened with simple methods.

Certain car manufacturers also offer mobile apps that can unlock your car. You can ask your automaker if this service is available to you.

1. Shoelaces

Shoelaces might not seem like the best tool to use when you're locked out of your car but they can be very helpful in the event that you know how to use them. If your vehicle has an opening tab that can be moved vertically, usually near the window, you can unlock it using a pair of shoelaces.

Then you can tie a slip knot in the middle of two shoelaces. Join both ends and create an elongated loop 3/4 of the way along the shoelaces. Then, pull the knot down into the crack between your car's door and the frame, and move the shoelace in a way that it connects to the lock mechanism. This can take a little time and trial however when the shoelace has been secured, simply pull up on both ends to open your vehicle.

The most important thing to remember when using this method is to work slowly and be sure not to scratch or damage your car in the process. If you are able to successfully employ this method to open your car, it can help you save the expense of a locksmith or roadside assistance service and get you back on your way in less than a minute.

This method is a great alternative to more abrasive methods such as using a hanger, which can scratch your car. However, it may not always work, especially on more sophisticated models. In the event that your vehicle's locking mechanism doesn't respond to this method using a long rod of wood or a screwdriver might be required to break the lock open.

2. Coat Hanger

Being locked out of your car is one of the most frustrating experiences in the modern world. Many people have seen their uncles or fathers use coathangers to open car door when they were kids, but this can be risky and not work for all vehicles. The use of coat hangers to open a door in a car can harm the door's frame and in some states it is illegal.

You can unlock your car using an easy wire coathanger by sliding it between the door and the door frame. The hanger is slipped into the gap, and then bend it into a small "V" shape to ensure that it gets a good grip on the lock post. Pull up on the hanger and you'll be able to release the pin that controls the lock. It is possible to move the hook back and forth several times before you find something that causes the lock to move however it shouldn't require a lot of effort to lift the bar.

If you're unable to get the hook of your coat to let go of the control arm, you might try placing it between the window and the weather stripping. You may have to look around using the hook of the hanger to find this area however once you've found it, you can play around with the hanger until you hear your door open. This technique isn't without risk however, it could be a great way to gain entry into your vehicle without having to seek professional assistance or the use of a key. If this method doesn't work, you can always contact an emergency roadside assistance service or locksmith to get help.

3. Wooden Wedge

A simple slip of the fingers or a little bit of carelessness could result in you losing your keys in a snap. If you don't wish to wait for AAA roadside assistance, or a locksmith to arrive at your location you'll need a quick way to unlock your vehicle.

You can use any tool that could open an opening between your frame and your door. For instance, you can use a screwdriver, tennis-ball, or coat hanger. You may need to squirt some air into the space to allow it to be wide enough for you to insert your tool and reach the lock button, but be cautious not to scratch your car.

Many people use a pair of pliers or other tools when they lock their keys in their cars however, it's better to use a tool that won't scratch or scuff your paint or aluminum trim. Inflatable wedges are great for this purpose, and they are available in a variety of sizes that fit inside the majority of doors.

Another alternative is to use an extended strip of plastic folded in half, for example grocery bags. Slide the strip into the door that is pried open and, once it's to the lock, loop it around the lock knob and pull upward. This method is a little messy, but it's faster than the coat hanger or screwdriver that can be difficult to control.

If you own a brand newer vehicle the lock mechanism might not be located in the traditional handle on the outside, but rather at the top of your window, near the weather seal. To unlock a car with this kind of lock, you will need to bend the wire hanger's tip to form hook. Slide it into the gap between the window and the door (or weather stripping), until it reaches the switch or lever that locks.

4. Air Wedge

Air wedges, such as this one from HPC are a standard tool used by repo and locksmith professionals to make room around the window frame of the car for more straightforward tools entry. They're also a great way to prevent damaging the vehicle if you can't get into it with keys.

The air pump wedge is placed between the weather stripping and the door to provide the right pressure. Then, a manual hand pump is used to fill the bag to the point that it separates the vehicle door from the vehicle window and opens enough to allow for the use of a car unlocking tool. This allows you to break the lock mechanism manual and unlock a car's door without a key.

A good air wedge will have a stiffener to prevent it from collapsing when pumped up, and an escape valve to stop over-inflation. It should also come with a durable, non-marring vinyl bag designed for a variety of uses. These wedges can be when used with a long-reach automobile unlocking tool for doors or a picker that is inserted in the wedge.

This method is not recommended for opening a car door by a person. This could damage the vehicle which could require costly repairs at the body shop. It is also not a safe method to unlock your car if you've locked your keys in.

It is suggested to contact an experienced roadside service to help you if you're stranded. They typically send a trained, experienced technician with the right tools to open a car door without causing damage to the vehicle. They can also assist with towing, battery replacement and other issues.

5. Rod

A rod is a thin, long metal piece that is typically tapered or cylindrical. It is a support for another object. It can be used in the car to create a gap in which you can reach the keys and open the doors. It isn't easy to use this method however, it's worth a try. If you're fortunate it could work.

If you're uncomfortable trying to open your car on your own or garage, you could ask a friend to help you. You can also employ an auto locksmith. You can find a locksmith near you by checking the internet or in the phone book. You can also sign up for an AAA membership that provides roadside assistance. This service will send a person to your location quickly, and you can have them unlock your car without any hassles.

A lot of newer cars have security features to stop people from breaking in without a key. Older models, however, are more difficult to break into. To unlock these vehicles, make use of a coat hanger or a rod. To do this, you must separate the coat hanger at its hook and bend its straight side into a hook. Slide the hook over the weather strip and into the door slit to create an opening. Then, insert stylish mobility scooters and move it to depress or move the door lock switch.

Some automakers also provide smartphone apps that can help you in the event that you are locked out of your car. BMW and Hyundai, for example have lockout apps that let you unlock your car using the smartphone's screen. Other automakers, including General Motors, have an OnStar program that can aid you unlock your car if it's locked out. To access these apps, you'll require an iPhone 11 or later or Apple Watch Series 5 or later running the most current version of watchOS and be within Bluetooth range of your compatible vehicle.
