As a long-time fan of King Kong, I was eager to see Peter Jackson’s take on the character. And while the film does a great job updating the story for modern audiences, there are some deeper faults that linger.

The main problem with the film is that it takes a while to get moving. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it can make the movie feel languid. It’s also possible that a more exhilarating John Barry score would have worked better for this version of Kong.

Fortunately, when the action does start to kick in, it really hits hard. The helicopter battles and the scene in the boneyard are standouts. The fight between Kong and Godzilla is also quite good, but perhaps the best part of the film is the scene where Kong rips off Mechagodzilla’s mechanical head.

There’s a not-so-subtle commentary here that humankind is constantly going into lands that we do not belong in and, when those people who live there fight back, we turn them into the villains. kingkong89 ’s a pretty obvious statement, but it does give the film its heart. Another highlight is the way in which Kong is shown to be a hero. He’s a hero not only because he saves Ann and kills Mechagodzilla, but because he is willing to sacrifice his life for those who are important to him.

The only real weakness of the film is that some parts of it are a bit overdone. The pacing in the first act is uneven, and the scenes with Jia are a bit overly melodramatic. But if you can overlook these problems, Kong is an incredible film.

Unlike the 1976 remake, this new King Kong is not only a man in an ape suit. He is a powerful, iconic creature that has been brought to life with amazing special effects. His range of facial expressions is impressive, and he can convey a wide variety of emotions.

The rest of the cast does a good job too, especially Karloff as Dr. Seward and Brooke Shields as Kong’s mother. The final scene is also great, and it is nice that the film leaves us with a happy ending instead of putting Kong through hell for his victory over Godzilla.

kingkong89 in all, I found this to be a very enjoyable film that is definitely worth watching. It is a worthy sequel to the 1933 classic and it raises the bar for cinematic spectacle even higher than the original did. I can’t wait to see how other artists reimagine Kong in the future, and I hope that they will update Carl Denham into a James Cameron type of character and explore the possibilities of real world exploration. The fact that the original King Kong is soon to enter the public domain opens up a lot of creative opportunities too. And who knows, maybe we’ll eventually see a version of the story that features Kong fighting a trio of velociraptors.
