Changing the Battery in Your Mazda 3 Key Fob

There's nothing more frustrating than getting in your car after a long day and discovering that the key fob battery is dead. This is a simple solution that can be accomplished at a big box retailer or hardware store.

The addition of a spare key fob to your Mazda 3 can be an cost-effective way to stay away from the hassle of being towed to the dealership and having them re-program your keys.

Battery Replacement

You can replace the battery on your Mazda 3 keyfob at home. You should only replace it when the battery dies or if you notice a message stating "Low keyfob battery" on the multi-information display. Replace battery."

You'll need to use a flathead screwdriver, tape and patience to open the case. The flathead screwdriver's head in a notch or gap in the bottom part of the Mazda 3 key fob to remove the lower part. Repeat the procedure for the top piece of metal, but be sure not to damage the rubber ring on the bottom of the case.

You'll find a slot on each side of the case that houses the battery. Use the tape-wrapped flathead screwdriver to gently pry the case open, starting on one side before moving to the opposite. Remove the battery that was used and place in the new CR2025 and make sure it's in the right orientation for proper orientation. Attach the cap to the battery the other side and attach both sides of your key fob case by pressing until they click.

After replacing the battery, lock and unlock your doors to test whether the fob works. If everything is in order the Mazda 3 remote features can be used again.

Pairing Issues

If your key fob stopped working suddenly it could be because the transmitter in the car is damaged. It is typically a need for an expert repair and may need a new key fob.

If you've attempted to replace the battery and reprogram the key fob, but it's not working the chip inside the key fob could be faulty. This can happen if the key fob was dropped on hard surfaces or exposed to saltwater, or even touched by dirty hands.

You'll need to find the small "key" that is built into the seam, to remove the circuit board and determine the problem. G28CarKeys can then examine the electronic chip for corrosion or damage. To avoid damaging the chip, it's recommended to use a clean paper towel.

You can also take a close look at the battery connector's terminals and see if they are damaged or cracked. If this is the case, then carefully reconnecting them can generally restore the functionality of the key fob. Similarly, you can inspect the buttons to see whether they are worn out or damaged. If the buttons are loose, they can easily be soldered back as well unless the button is physically snapped off.

Interference Signals

There are few things more frustrating than gazing at a "No Fob Detected" message when you attempt to start your vehicle. This typically happens at most difficult moments, like the time you're late to work or when you have to pick up children from school/daycare. The good news is that there are a few steps you can follow to resolve the issue and determine the root of the problem.

Interference signals can cause the remote key fob not to function properly. This can be caused from objects such as weather conditions, buildings as well as transmitters operating on the same frequency. Interference can occur if your vehicle has aftermarket equipment that transmits at the same frequency as your key fob.

The key fob can also be damaged if exposed to water or salty water. Water can damage the rubber seals of the electronic chip particularly in the event that the key fob is submerged in water for a lengthy time. The chip could stop working and may require replacement of the keyfob. If you have a programable key cleaning the chip with isopropyl alcohol or an electronic cleaner to aid in its return to functionality. If this doesn't help the chip, it is likely fried and will need to be replaced.

Locking or Unlocking the Doors

The buttons on the key fob transmit electronic signals to the solenoid in the car, which then converts this signal into mechanical action. It locks and unlocks doors. If the door lock fails to work it could be because of an issue with the solenoid. This requires expert auto repair shops to examine.

A dead 12V battery can also stop the fob from working effectively. This can happen when your battery is not charged or if the contacts are corrosion-prone. The good news is that a new battery can resolve this issue in a matter of minutes.

If the key fob isn't functioning after you replace the battery or try to reprogram it, the issue might be in the receiver module. The device receives radio frequency signals from the key fob and interprets them into controlling the functions of the vehicle. It can be expensive to repair if it becomes faulty.

To check whether this is the case, start by inserting the spare key into the key slot and setting the ignition to ON. Press the key fob button two times within 10 seconds, without removing it. The Mazda 3 system will now be able to synchronize the key with your car and you can use it as your primary remote for driving. You can program up to three keys in this manner.
