How to Fix Car Ignition Switch Problems

If your car starts and runs, but the ignition switch isn't able to switch over the spark plugs, it could be a variety of causes. Some are simple and inexpensive to fix, others require specialized tools and help from an expert mechanic.

The first step is to lubricate the socket of the key. You can use graphite powder or silicon aerosol spray. Make sure that the ignition cylinder is clean and has no loose springs or obstructions.

Battery

It could be that your battery is dead when your car isn't starting. This is a common issue that can be solved with a battery charge or an electrical jump. If this does not fix the problem, your ignition switch may be defective. This component is responsible for transferring power from the battery to other electrical components such as the starter motor and the ignition coil. If the ignition switch is damaged, it won't allow current to flow through, and the engine won't begin.

The battery is the primary source of electrical energy in your vehicle. It's a black, insulated box with positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on top. The terminals can become corroded, preventing the battery from providing electricity to the rest of the vehicle. By disconnecting the battery, you can employ a wire bristle remove any corrosion. You can also clean the terminals with a baking soda solution.

Your car's battery could be nearing the end of its life and will require replacement. A new battery will provide the proper voltage to the spark plugs in your vehicle which is essential to ensure that your engine is running properly.

ignition key replacement cost is responsible for converting low voltage from the battery into high voltage that can ignite your car's spark plugs to start the engine. If the ignition coil is defective and is not in a position to ignite the plugs, and the engine won't start. You can test the ignition coil by looking for a spark in the engine or turning the key and observing whether the engine spins.

It is possible to replace the starter motor too. If you hear a grating sound when you turn on your ignition, this means that the starter bearings are deteriorating. This could be a costly repair, so it's recommended to replace the motor of your starter early in the event that you notice signs of wear and wear. The starter motor can be replaced by replacing a few bolts and components.

Alternator

The alternator is a device that recharges your battery while your engine is running. It also provides power to your car's electrical parts. Examine the battery first if you suspect that your alternator may be malfunctioning. This will allow you to determine whether your alternator is causing your battery to deplete or if your battery is old and should be replaced.

The alternator in your car also provides power for your dashboard lights, windshield wipers and power windows, electric steering as well as heated seats and your radio while the car is running. You can use a voltage meter to test your battery and alternator for the proper voltage levels. If your battery is less than 6 volts, it must be replaced or charged right away. A dead or weak battery will also prevent the starter motor from turning the engine over and will require more jumper cables to get your car started.

Before you begin to dismantle the Alternator, shut off the ignition and secure all doors. It is also important to disconnect the negative cable from the battery, then tuck it away somewhere safe and put on the safety equipment. Refer to a vehicle specific repair manual for guidance on how to gain access to the alternator and any other components you'll need to remove.

After you've removed the belt, if your vehicle is equipped with one remove the warning light wire from the side of the alternator. The wire will connect directly to an alternator terminal that is marked WL or IN. Certain vehicles, however, have a separate relay for this purpose. If your warning light doesn't blink, it's likely to be a different issue.

It is recommended to regularly check your alternator for any indications of malfunction. While you can perform some of the tests by yourself, you should bring your vehicle into Les Schwab for a complimentary inspection and expert advice. Our technicians will test for corrosion on your battery posts, battery (+ and +) and relays, fuses, as well as voltage output, cold starting amps, and much more.

Starter Motor

The starter motor is an essential component of the ignition system. It turns the engine over to allow air to be sucked in and ignite the fuel. It is common for the starter motor to be the cause of your car isn't turning over. There are a few troubleshooting methods to help you determine the issue and fix it.

When you turn on your vehicle's ignition key, a switch inside the starter turns on a pinion-gear that fits into grooves of the flywheel. The pinion gear turns the flywheel, which begins the engine. The gear retracts when you release the key to avoid damage.

There are many things that can cause problems in the starter motor, such as an electrical problem in the internal windings, a mechanical problem (such as teeth not meshing on the pinion gear or flywheel) or a dead battery. A defective starter motor can sound like a dead battery; it'll make a click as it tries to turn over the engine, but won't.

If the starter motor isn't functioning One of the first things a mechanic should look at is the state of charge on the battery and its terminals. If the battery has corrosion or is depleted, it will need to recharged or replaced.

Depending on how serious the problem is, the mechanic could also test the solenoid using a multimeter. The solenoid is a huge magnetic switch that transmits a rush of power from the battery cables that are thick to the starter. This switch basically connects the long battery cable to the windings inside the starter that actually activate the electric motor, plus it pushes an actuator rod that turns on an engaging fork, which in turn pushes the gear that pinions to automatically engage with the flywheel.

A jumper wire can be used to bypass the ignition. This is a temporary solution but it shouldn't be recommended unless you are able to do it right. You'll need to carefully route the jumper wire to battery terminals, and ensure that the switch is in the "Start" position.

Ignition Switch

The ignition switch is the place where you insert your key into the car. This switch is used by the system to start the engine and send electric current to the starter. However it isn't immune to wear like other components of the car. The switch may also get stuck in its slot or get locked. You should check for problems frequently to be able to act before the car won't start.

If your key seems to struggle to turn or it is stuck in the ignition, it may have been locked. This is a problem that occurs in a variety of vehicles due to a lack of grease. Using a graphite or silicone-based grease on the pin that releases the key could help. Spray a little into the ignition and then try moving the key. If it's stuck, use a piler or hacksaw blade to help move it.

An ignition issue can lead to a number of other issues too. The anti-theft system might stop working, or the starter motor might not start when you plug the key in. It could also cause other functions to stop working or not work at all.

A damaged ignition may cause extra wear and tear on other components. If you own a keychain with multiple items, or a large one, this can stress the ignition switch and accelerate wear on the internal components. Extreme temperature fluctuations may affect the lubricants and materials used in the ignition switch.

It is important to test the new ignition switch before reassembling other parts and the steering column. Make sure that the switch works and that the engine is running without issue. It is also important to confirm that the new ignition switch is compatible with your vehicle's model and model. It could be worth it to get a dealership to install the ignition switch for you, if you are not confident about your ability to do so. They can also test and connect any other components or even replace them.
