Reasons Your Fiat 500 Key Fob Won't Work

A key fob for Fiat 500 allows you to easily open doors and start your vehicle. There are many reasons why the fob could stop working. These include a dead coin battery or damage to the receiver module, issues, or interference.

This listing is for an NEW replacement Fiat Flip Key Remote that is similar to the Ilco brand. It must be professionally programmed (click here to find local locksmiths in the automotive industry). This remote includes lock, unlock and trunk buttons.

Dead Coin Battery

The most frequent reason that your 500 key fob doesn't function is the battery is dead. Modern key fobs have an operating range that is limited and must be within just a few inches of the vehicle in order to function. If you are far from your vehicle and press the key fob button the car won't respond and will display a "Key Fob Not Detected" message in the instrument cluster.

If this occurs you need to replace the battery of your coin-cell (Part Number CR2032) by a brand new one from a reputable brand such as Panasonic Duracell or Energizer. You can find them in your local hardware store, or on the internet.

After you've replaced the coin cell battery, you can test it by standing next to your Fiat 500 and pressing the buttons. The car should flash its parking lights, and the key fob should operate the lock and unlock buttons.

If the key fob doesn't function after replacing the battery, it could have water damage that prevents it from communicating with the receiver module inside your vehicle. Water damage can happen in many ways, such as the simple splash or submerging your key fob in saltwater at the beach. If you suspect that your fob has been exposed to water, you can try placing it in a dry rice bag to draw the moisture out. If this fails, you'll need to have your fob reprogrammed either by an auto locksmith or dealer.

Water Damage

Damage to the water supply can occur if you immerse the fob into the ocean, or wash it in a machine. Saltwater can cause the circuit board to become shorted and eventually end up dying. It's not a good idea to let the fob get wet, but don't give it up even if you accidentally drop the fob in the water or don't remove it from your pants pocket.

First remove the battery from the fob. Before replacing the battery, clean the electronic chip with isopropyl, or a similar product. Check the fob to verify if it's working. If the key doesn't function, it may have to be reset. This is usually done by an auto locksmith or dealer.

If the key is newer and has never been programmed to your car, it will likely need to be replaced completely. This is an easy process that can be carried out by a professional locksmith for automotive use. The locksmith will have to cut the key to match the ignition of your car. The locksmith will also have to reprogram your fob in the car's system. This is a low-cost and quick process that can be completed in the same day.

Receiver Module Issues

One of the main reasons why your 500 key fob could stop working is that it's simply out of range. The remote has a range of 30 feet. So if you are too far from your car, it won't respond to your commands. This can be easily fixed by moving it closer to your vehicle until it begins responding.

If you've replaced your coin battery (commonly called a "button" or "watch") and the fob isn't working It could be because of an internal circuit board problem. Reprogramming the fob usually resolves the issue. There are instructions on how to do this for the majority of vehicles by searching YouTube or checking out the owner's manual.

It is possible to replace the metal retaining clips that keep the coin battery in place. If they loose tension, it could prevent the coin battery from being seated properly and could cause your remote to malfunction.

In fiat 500 key replacement is possible that the fob will become disconnected from your vehicle due to software problems or hardware issues. This issue can be fixed by visiting your local auto-locksmith or dealer to reprogram your key fob. In certain instances, they may need to reinstall the program in your body control module, as well.

Interference

Interference can also cause the key fob not to receive or transmit the signal. This could occur if the key fob is in proximity to the radio transmitter (cell phones or radar detectors) or another source of electromagnetic radiation. The key fob might not function due to a poor connection to the buttons water damage or damage to the internal chips.

If the key fob has stopped working one day suddenly and you've tried everything you can at home to fix it e.g. replacing the battery, reprogramming, and using the spare key fob, you may have a defective receiver module on your 500. The receiver module is situated under the dash and receives the radio frequency signals from the key fob. It converts them into electronic commands that the vehicle interprets.

There is a straightforward method to reset the 500's on-board system, including the keyfob. Disconnect the 12 volt battery for about 15 minutes by disconnecting the negative cable first then the positive cable. Reconnect the battery. This will eliminate any remaining electricity and then restart the car's computers, which could help the key fob to function again. If the problem persists you should consult an expert technician. They can identify the root of any problems.
