Transponder Chip

The transponder chip, also known as "chip key" is a microchip that's built into the head of your car key. It's also one of the most crucial security layers in your car. The term "transponder" is derived from the combination of the responder and transmitter. This is because, after the key is put into the ignition and the key is turned on into the ignition, the antenna of your car sends out a blast of radio frequency energy to a transponder chip. The chip responds by transmitting its unique identification code back to the antenna ring. The car's computer interprets this information and decides whether it's valid or not.

If the key isn't transponder, the vehicle will be immobilized. The chip is secured with an extra layer of polycarbonate that prevents it being copied or cloned using regular mechanical keys. Beishir Lock and Security carries an extensive selection of transponder keys for sale at a fraction of the cost of dealerships selling cars.

Transponder chips first began to become popular in the 1980's when GM introduced them into the Corvette. The technology significantly reduced the number of car thefts, since it made hot-wiring a thing of past. Immobiliser System

The engine immobiliser (also called the anti-theft system) is a key element of your vehicle's security. When you insert your key into the ignition switch or Smart Key fob, the transponder chip inside will send a code to your vehicle's Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The ECU ensures that the information generated by the chip matches the one stored in it and then it allows the engine to start.

The immobiliser on your car is designed to protect you from theft in this way. If the code inside the chip doesn't match, the ECU stops the flow of current to the fuel pump relay and the injection system, which prevents the engine from beginning. In addition the immobiliser could stop the starter motor and the ignition coil, preventing the engine from being started by force.

Unfortunately, the system is not completely secure. Thieves can crack the code that allows you to unlock the car's immobiliser system, and start it up. The latest versions of the system utilize the longer cryptographic code which will make it difficult to guess.

Car immobilisers have been required since 1998 but many cars were equipped with basic immobilisers prior to that. It is also worth noting that even though an immobiliser system makes it harder to steal a car it doesn't stop thieves from towing away from it or breaking into the car in order to steal your valuables.

If you lose a remote or key fob is an expensive and time-consuming process. A locksmith will need to gain access to the vehicle to decode the VIN or run it, and then reprogram the replacement key to erase all signatures from the computer for all keys that have been stolen, lost or damaged.

If your car is fitted with an integrated security chip, or transponder, which is in the key, it will make a replacement much more costly. The chips transmit signals to your car that confirms that you are the driver, and allow doors to be opened and the engine to be started. The average cost for an additional smart key is around $160.
