How to Fix Car Ignition Switch Problems

If your vehicle starts and runs but the ignition switch doesn't switch over the spark plugs, it could be a myriad of reasons. Some are easy and cheap to fix, while others require special tools and assistance from a mechanic.

First, you need to lubricate the socket that holds the key. You can apply graphite powder or a silicon aerosol spray. Also, make sure the ignition cylinder is free of obstructions and loose springs.

Battery

If your car doesn't start it could be due to the battery being dead. This is a common issue that can be fixed with an extra jump or charging the battery. If this doesn't fix the issue your ignition switch could be defective. This component is responsible for transferring power from the battery to other electrical components like the starter motor and the ignition coil. If the ignition switch is not working properly it won't allow current to flow through, and the engine won't begin.

The battery is the source of all electrical energy in your vehicle. It's a dark box with positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on top. The terminals can get corroded, preventing the battery from providing electricity to the rest of the vehicle. You can clean the battery's terminals by disconnecting the battery and using a wire brush to get rid of any corrosion. You can also clean the terminals with baking soda.

It is also possible that your car battery is nearing the end of its life and requires replacement. A new battery will provide the right voltage to your vehicle's spark plugs, which is required to ensure a functioning engine.

The ignition coil converts the battery's low voltage into high voltage, which causes it to ignite the spark plugs in your car and start the engine. If the ignition coil is defective and is not capable of sparking the plugs and the engine won't start. The ignition coil can be tested by examining the engine for sparks or turning the key to check if it turns over.

It is possible to replace the starter motor, too. If you hear a grating sound when you turn your ignition key it means that the starter bearings are wearing out. This can be a costly repair, so it's best to replace the starter motor as soon as possible if you notice any signs of wear and wear and tear. Changing the starter motor is an easy process that requires replacing some bolts and parts.

Alternator

The alternator is an instrument that recharges your battery while your engine is running. It also is the power source for your car's electrical components. Test the battery first if you suspect that your alternator is failing. This will help you determine if the alternator is causing the battery to run out or whether your battery is simply old and needs to be replaced.

Your car's alternator also provides power for your dash lights, windshield wipers as well as electric steering, power windows as well as heated seats and your radio while the vehicle is idling. A voltmeter can be used to check the voltage of your alternator and battery. If your battery's voltage is lower than 6 volts, it must be charged immediately or replaced. Batteries that are dead or not charged can also stop the starter from turning the engine on and will require additional jumper cables to begin your vehicle.

Before you begin dismantling the Alternator, shut off the ignition and secure all doors. Remove the negative cable and store it safely. Wear safety gear. Refer to a repair manual specific to your vehicle to get instructions on how to remove the alternator or any other components.

If your vehicle is equipped with a warning light wire, you can disconnect it from the back of the generator after removing the belt. This wire will connect directly to the alternator terminal that is marked WL or IN. Some vehicles, however have a separate relay to perform this purpose. If your warning light does not come on, you should think about a different cause.

The alternator is a crucial component in your vehicle, and you should inspect it regularly for signs of problems. You can perform certain of these tests yourself, but it's recommended to bring your vehicle to Les Schwab so they can examine it and provide you with expert advice. Our technicians will test for corrosion on your battery, battery posts (+ and -), fuses, relays and voltage output as well as cold starting amps and many more.

Starter Motor

The starter motor is an essential element of the ignition system. It rotates the engine so that air can be sucked into it, which is needed to ignite the fuel. When your car won't start it's typically caused by a problem with the starter motor. There are many methods of troubleshooting that can assist you in identifying and fixing the issue.

When you turn on your car's ignition key, a switch within the starter activates a pinion gear that fits into grooves of the flywheel. The pinion gear turns the flywheel, which in turn begins the engine. When you release the key the pinion gear retracts and disengages from the flywheel to avoid damage.

There are a myriad of things that can be wrong in the starter motor, including an electrical failure in the internal windings, a mechanical problem (such as teeth no longer meshing on the pinion gear or flywheel) or a dead battery. A defective starter motor will sound like a dead battery; it'll make a click as it tries to turn the engine, but won't.

The charge level and the terminals of the battery will be checked by a mechanic if the starter motor doesn't work. If the battery is damaged or is not functioning properly, it will need to recharged or replaced.

Depending on how serious the problem is, the mechanic could test the solenoid by using a multimeter. The solenoid is a massive magnet switch, delivers an electric current from the long battery cables to the starter. G28 Car Keys connects the thick battery cable to the wires inside the starter that make the electric motor turn, plus it pushes the rod, which turns an engaging fork, which will then push the gear that pinions to automatically engage with the flywheel.

Another option is to bypass the ignition switch using an extension wire. This is only a temporary fix and you shouldn't attempt it unless you are certain of the procedure. You'll need to carefully route the jumper wire through the battery terminals and make sure the switch is set to the "Start" position.

Ignition Switch

The ignition switch is where you insert your keys into the car. This will enable electrical flow to your starter and start up the engine, but it isn't immune to wear and tear as other car parts. The switch can also get stuck inside its slot or get locked. You should check for problems regularly to identify the problem before the car won't start.

It is possible that your key was locked if the key is difficult to turn or becomes stuck in the ignition. This is a common issue for many vehicles and happens because of a lack of lubrication. Using a graphite or silicone-based grease on the pin that releases the key could help. Spray a small amount into the ignition and try moving the key. If it's stuck, try using a piler or hacksaw blade.

An ignition issue can cause a variety of other issues, too. The anti-theft system might stop working, or the starter motor might not crank when you put the key. It could also cause other functions to cease functioning or cease to function at all.

A malfunctioning ignition could cause additional wear and tear on other components. If you own a keychain with multiple items or a heavy one, it can stress the ignition switch and increase wear on the internal components. Extreme temperature fluctuations can impact the materials and lubricants in the ignition switch.

It's important to test the new ignition switch prior to reassembling other parts and the steering column. Make sure that the new ignition switch works and that the engine starts smoothly. Make sure that the new ignition switch with your vehicle model and model. It could be worth it to get a dealership to install the ignition switch for you, if you are not confident about your ability to install it. They can also test and connect any other parts or replace them.
