Transponder Chip

The transponder or "chip key", is a micro-chip that is embedded in the head portion of your car keys. It's among the most vital safety features for your vehicle. The term "transponder" comes from the combination transmitter and responder. This is because, after the key is put into the ignition and the key is turned on around, the antenna inside your car transmits radio frequency energy to a transponder chip. The chip responds by sending its unique identification code to the antenna ring, and the car's computer can then identify that information and determine whether or not it's a legitimate key.

The key must be a transponder key to start the car. If it's not, the vehicle will remain immobilized. The chip is protected by a special polycarbonate coating which prevents it from being copied using regular mechanical keys or copied by laser equipment. Beishir Lock and Security offers an extensive selection of transponder keys for a fraction of the cost of car dealers.

In the 1980s, GM began to introduce transponder chips into the Corvette. This technology drastically reduced the number of vehicle thefts by making hot-wiring obsolete. This is the simplest explanation of a chip key. If you have any additional questions, please contact us.

Immobiliser System

The engine immobiliser system (also called the anti-theft system) is a vital aspect of your vehicle's security. When you insert your key into the ignition switch or Smart Key fob, the transponder chip inside it sends a code to your vehicle's Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The ECU checks that the code sent by the chip is identical to the code stored in it and then permits the engine to begin.

This is the principal way that the immobiliser of your car stops theft. If the code in the chip isn't compatible, the ECU blocks the flow of current to the fuel pump relay and the injection system, preventing the engine from beginning. The immobiliser could also disable the starter motor or ignition coil in order to prevent the engine from getting forced to start.

Unfortunately the system isn't 100% secure. The code used to unlock the immobiliser in your car can be hacked by thieves and used to open it. However, the most recent versions of these systems have an extended cryptographic sequence which should be harder to guess.

Car immobilisers are mandatory since 1998 but many cars were equipped with basic immobilisers before that. While an immobiliser makes it harder to steal a car, it doesn't prevent thieves from towing your vehicle away or breaking into to steal your possessions.

Key Replacement

If you lose your remote or key fob is a hassle and very expensive. A locksmith will need to gain access to the car, decode or run the VIN and then reprogramme a new replacement to remove any signatures that were previously stored on the computer for all of keys that have been lost, stolen or damaged.

If your car comes with a security chip, or transponder, in the key, it will make replacing it more expensive. The chips transmit an alert to your car in order to verify that you are the driver and allow doors to be opened or the engine to start. The typical price for a replacement smart key is about $160.
