A game online is a video game that can be played over the internet with other players from anywhere in the world using devices like computers, mobile phones and dedicated gaming consoles. The social aspect of online gaming can help children and young people feel part of a community, build teamwork skills and improve coordination and problem-solving. It can also help them develop social media and digital literacy skills. However, without the right guidance and boundaries, online gaming can expose young people to risks such as in-game bullying and sexual exploitation.

Wg77 is a huge industry that attracts a wide audience of people from a variety of backgrounds and age groups. It is sometimes criticised for its culture that can promote a range of negative behaviours including cyberbullying, violence and xenophobia. It can also be a form of social isolation for those who play alone. However, some studies have shown that the social aspects of online gaming can increase wellbeing.

Some games are designed to be social spaces, such as massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). Others are more competitive and involve competing against other players. These games are often referred to as esports. While the esports industry has become popular, it is still early days for this area of online gaming.

Most online games are designed to operate as ‘games as a service’, with monthly subscription fees and in-game purchases as ways for developers to maximise revenue. Wg77 are increasingly focusing on player-versus-player (PvP) content, and many of them include an endless loop of PvP battles that can last for hours on end.

Other games have been criticised for encouraging gambling behaviour by offering virtual items that can be exchanged for real money. These games are known as'skins betting' or 'loot boxes' and they can be found on PC, mobile phone and dedicated gaming consoles.

While there are some clear benefits of online gaming, it is important that parents and carers are aware of the risks. There are a range of warning signs that can indicate that a child or young person is spending too much time gaming and is at risk of over-use. It is recommended that parents and carers read eSafety’s guide to managing screen time and create a Family Tech Agreement together. This will help them set limits on their child or young person’s screen time, while empowering them to use gaming for positive development.
